Message from the President
It's almost two years now since the NED Alumni Association of Southern California (NEDAASC) was formed to provide a platform for the alumni residing in Southern California to renew a connection with their Alma Mater. The goals of the Organization were many, but the primary objectives were to assist NED in enhancing its quality of education and to provide financial assistance to some needy students who were excelling in their academic achievements, but were facing hardships in financing their education.
We all remember our days at NED. As the admission to NED was based strictly on merit, most of us belonged to poor families with little resources to finance our engineering education, but with the grace of Allah, the help from others was plentiful. Tuition was almost nothing, books were provided and many organizations awarded scholarships to those who needed financial assistance. We graduated from NED and moved on to lead very successful lives. Now, NEDAASC wants to offer help to those at NED who are struggling to make ends meet while they pursue their education.
During 2009, NEDAASC provided scholarships to nineteen students. Ten scholarships were awarded in 2008. We held an essay competition to enhance the writing skills of the young NED students. Rs. 75,000 were awarded to the top three winners. A sum of Rs. 90,000 was donated to an ailing NED Professor for his medical treatment. Many highly qualified alumni presented seminars at the NED campus in their areas of expertise. Some members of NEDAASC provided financial assistance to cover the cost of GREs for many students who applied for their graduate studies in the United States
NEDAASC also provided a social platform for the alumni to get together, mingle, and travel through the memory lane of the great NED days. In July of last year NEDAASC organized its Annual Convention which was attended by 500 NEDians and their friends. The Convention was an unforgettable event. Those who attended the Convention will cherish its memories for the rest of their lives.
NEDAASC also publishes a quarterly newsletter which readers seem to enjoy a lot.
For the coming year NEDAASC would like to increase the number of scholarships and hold more technical seminars at the NED campus in Karachi. On the light side, we will continue to hold social gatherings for the NEDians where new memories will be made.
